ACCESSIBLE PARKING PROGRAM
The Wichita Police Department is seeking volunteers who are interested in working with us to reduce the handicap parking violations within the city limits of Wichita.
If you are interested in being considered for this volunteer program, please read the description and requirements below, and then email or call Lt. Darras Delamaide @ 268-4196 between 8-5, Monday-Friday to set up an appointment to begin the application process.

Description of Accessible Parking Program Volunteer Duties:

A volunteer patrols parking lots photographing violations of the accessible parking ordinances, within the City of Wichita.

Volunteers may request citations for displaying an expired handicapped placard, unauthorized parking in an accessible parking space, parking in an access aisle, or blocking an accessible parking space.

The volunteer will report to, and be supervised by a law enforcement officer designated by the Chief of Police.

The volunteer will appear and testify in court when requested by the City of Wichita Department of Law.

Volunteers must consider equity and justice when photographing possible violations.

It is vital to this program that volunteers strive to promote accessible parking for people with disabilities, but just as importantly serve as ambassadors for the City of Wichita.
Minimum requirements for volunteer applicant:

High School Graduation or GED.

Knowledge/skill in understanding and applying accessible-parking laws.

Effective communication skills
-
Capabilities to identify a vehicle that is eligible to park in a designated parking space.

Ability to take photographs of violations.
-
Ability to handle situations of stress and/or confrontations by the public.

Ability to attend court hearings as required.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Must hold a valid Class "C" Drivers License.

Must have transportation, and maintain at a minimum, a continuous liability insurance policy in an amount as required by state law.

Must be able to provide fuel for transportation while working as a volunteer.

Must have a cell phone in possession while working as a volunteer.

Must have no prior convictions, and be able to pass a background investigation.

Must have no history of mental instability, anger management difficulties or competency issues.

Must be able to write legibly.

Must have no more than two moving violations convictions, diversions, or being at fault in more than one accident during the past twelve months.

Must have no convictions, or diversions of any felony or misdomeanor crime(s).

Ability to donate at least six hours per month to the program.
In addition to the completed application, you will be asked to submit:

A copy of your Drivers License

No less than three [3] references from non-family members
-
Proof of transportation and liability insurance.
This program will have a limited number of volunteers accepted, so even if you meet all requirements, you may be placed on a waiting list depending on the number of qualified applicants prior to your application.
